Museum of the Plains Indian Announces its 2023-2024 Winter Exhibition, Plains Indian Horse Culture

BROWNING, MONTANA: The Museum of the Plains Indian, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Indian Arts and Crafts Board (IACB), announces its 2023-24 Winter Exhibition, Plains Indian Horse Culture, featuring a selection of paintings from the IACB’s collection of Native American art. The exhibition will run from December 29, 2023, to May 24, 2024.
Plains Indian Horse Culture will feature paintings from various Native American artist of the Plains including Nathaniel Barney, Wilbur Black Weasel, William Big Springs Sr., George Flett, Cyrus Gros Ventre, Brandon Lane, Hart Merriam Schultz-Lone Wolf, and William Standing. The exhibit showcases the variety of painting styles used by the artists, including the use of pastel oils and oil paints. The exhibition also explores the uses of horses among Plains Indian Tribes and how their introduction changed their lives and culture. Today, horses are favored animals among the Plains Indian Tribes. This is reflected by their prominence in the Plains Indian art shown in this exhibition.
