On June 19, 2018, President Trump signed an Executive Order "Regarding the Ocean Policy to Advance the Economic, Security, and Environmental Interests of the United States". The Executive Order is intended to advance the economic, security, and environmental interests of the United States through improved public access to marine data and information, efficient Federal agency coordination on ocean related matters, and engagement with marine industries, the science and technology community, and other ocean stakeholders, including Regional Ocean Partnerships.

The order created the interagency Ocean Policy Committee, which consists of 26 Federal Department and Agency members including the Secretary of the Interior. The Department of the Interior is also a co-chair of the Ocean Policy Committee's Ocean Resource Subcommittee.

This Executive Order revoked and replaced Executive Order 13547.

The Ocean Policy Committee was codified in the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal years 2021 (P.L. 116-283) and 2023 (P.L. 117-263).
