The Department of the Interior Strategic Sciences Group was active from 2012-2018. It was created to meet the immediate need for strategic scientific information and expertise during environmental crises. The SSG provided the Department with a standing capacity to rapidly assemble teams of experts to construct interdisciplinary scenarios of environmental crises affecting DOI resources.

Through the development and application of science-based scenarios, the SSG provided assistance with emergency response and recovery from events such as Hurricane Sandy in 2013 and the 2018 Kilauea volcano eruption. In addition, the SSG provided valuable advisory tools to support DOI decision makers and their partners in preparing for hazard events such as invasive species and land use change affecting Departmental resources.
