Regulations for subsistence take of fish and shellfish published in Federal Register

On February 29, 2024, the Federal Subsistence Board (Board) published in the Federal Register the final rule for the subsistence taking of fish and shellfish (89 FR 14746). This final rule establishes the seasons, harvest limits, and methods and means for the taking of fish and shellfish for subsistence uses in Alaska for the 2023/24 and 2024/25 regulatory years. This rule also revises the customary and traditional use determinations for fish and shellfish and addresses deferred proposals from the 2022–2024 wildlife cycle.  

The Board published the proposed rule on March 17, 2022 (87 FR 15155), to amend the fish and shellfish section of subparts C and D of 36 CFR part 242 and 50 CFR part 100. Publication of the proposed rule opened a public proposal and review process. The final rule reflects Board review and action on those proposals following consideration of recommendations from the 10 Federal Subsistence Regional Advisory Councils, tribal and ANCSA corporation consultations, and public comments.

This rule is effective immediately.
