Celebrate America’s Story During National Park Week

WASHINGTON – The Department of the Interior and the National Park Service invite Americans to celebrate the people, places and events that shaped our nation during National Park Week, Aug. 22-30, 2026. 

With more than 400 national parks across the country, Americans can walk battlefields where history was made, stand in the homes of presidents and innovators, explore some of the nation’s most iconic landscapes and discover the stories that connect generations of Americans. 

As the nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of American independence, this year’s National Park Week theme, “Celebrate America’s Story,” recognizes the extraordinary history and shared heritage preserved in America’s national parks. 

“America’s national parks belong to the American people, and there is no better time to experience them than as we celebrate 250 years of our great nation,” said Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. “From the places where our history was made to the incredible landscapes that define our country, President Trump and his administration invite every American to get outside, visit a national park and celebrate the remarkable story of America.” 

“Each site within the National Park System represents a chapter in America’s story, and America’s semiquincentennial year is the perfect time to celebrate those stories,” said Jessica Bowron, National Park Service comptroller exercising the delegated authority of the director. “Dedicated employees at parks nationwide are ready to welcome visitors to join in the celebration during National Park Week.”  

Parks across the country will host a variety of events and ranger-led programs for visitors throughout National Park Week. To find a park near you, visit nps.gov. Events and programs can also be found on the nps.gov National Park Week calendar. 

Fee-Free Day and Junior Ranger Day  

The National Park Service marks its 110th birthday with an entrance fee-free day for U.S. residents on Tuesday, Aug. 25. On Sunday, Aug. 30, National Park Week concludes with National Junior Ranger Day. Children of all ages are encouraged to earn their official Junior Ranger badges while exploring, completing hands-on activities and learning about national parks. The Department of the Interior and the National Park Service are pleased to offer these special theme days within National Park Week to encourage families to enjoy national parks together.  

Celebrating the Nation’s 250th Anniversary 

The National Park Service’s efforts to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence support Executive Order 14189, Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday. Issued by President Donald J. Trump, the Executive Order calls for “a grand celebration worthy of the momentous occasion of the 250th anniversary of American Independence on July 4, 2026.” 

As Americans continue to celebrate the semiquincentennial throughout 2026, National Park Week offers a special opportunity to gather in these iconic places and celebrate the nation’s heritage during this historic anniversary year.

    Reclamation Publishes Final Environmental Impact Statement for Future Colorado River Operations

    The Bureau of Reclamation has released the Final Environmental Impact Statement, which designates a preferred course of action for future management of Lake Powell and Lake Mead. The preferred alternative establishes an adaptive decision framework to be used to develop operating guidelines designed to ensure reliable operations in the Colorado River Basin while maintaining the flexibility to respond to changing conditions over a 10-year period through 2036. The framework also preserves the opportunity for the Basin to continue working towards consensus agreements, and if successful, be incorporated into future operations.
