Reclamation Prize Activities

In 2015, the Bureau of Reclamation launched its first prize competition to develop, test and demonstrate new methods to remotely track fish.   Reclamation uses prize competitions to develop new, or improve existing, technologies in the theme areas of environment, infrastructure sustainability, and water availability.

Since 2015, Reclamation has launched 30 prize competitions. These include competitions that may now be complete or underway.

Reclamation’s prize challenge activities have over the years garnered several awards.  At the 5-year anniversary of the start of Challenge.gov, the General Service Administration (GSA) interagency platform for offering and tracking federally-sponsored prize challenges, Reclamation received the Newcomer of the Year Award, the Best in Technology Award, and Reclamation’s desalination research expert, Saied Delagah, won the Unsung Hero Award for his outstanding, behind the scenes coordination of the technical efforts that enabled the international Desal Prize.  In 2020, Reclamation received Topcoder’s 2020 Public Sector Innovation Award for its Streamflow Forecast Rodeo competition.
