In addition to the projects managed in specific regions, DOI-ITAP also manages projects that cross continents, bringing representatives from a variety of countries to a single location, either within or outside the U.S., to build capacity and share lessons learned. 

 

GLOBAL PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

Supporting Water Security Worldwide (Global)

The U.S. Global Water Strategy envisions a water-secure world that advances health, prosperity, stability, and resilience through sustainable and equitable water management and access to safe drinking water, sanitation services, and hygiene. 

DOI-ITAP supports the U.S. Global Water Strategy through the Ambassador’s Water Experts Program, which sends U.S. water experts abroad to assist foreign government partners with solving key water challenges. 

With support from the U.S. Department of State, the Ambassador’s Water Experts Program has delivered water technical assistance to more than 30 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Combatting Wildlife Trafficking in Cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Global)

DOI-ITAP combats global wildlife trafficking by leveraging the leadership and technical expertise of subject matter experts within DOI’s Fish and Wildlife Service – Office of Law Enforcement. 

With support from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, DOI-ITAP provides targeted trainings on wildlife law enforcement, investigating wildlife crimes, and regulating wildlife trade to regional counterparts in Latin America and Asia.  

Participating wildlife officers not only develop new skills, but by sharing experiences with international counterparts and building lasting professional relationships, become stronger and more empowered wildlife conservation partners. 

Rightful Return and Protection of Cultural Heritage (Global)

DOI-ITAP is working to protect and preserve cultural heritage around the world by: increasing the U.S. government’s capacity to monitor and implement cultural property agreements; promoting sound management of cultural heritage sites and objects; and increasing regional collaboration to protect cultural heritage from shared threats.  

DOI-ITAP has directly assisted in the establishment of bilateral agreements aiming to protect the cultural property and heritage of Bolivia, Costa Rica, and Egypt.  

DOI-ITAP also has facilitated productive engagement among Tribal and Native Hawaiian community leaders, international museum leaders, and U.S. Government representatives on the return of Native American cultural items and ancestral remains held at museums around the globe.  

DOI-ITAP is proud to be working with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ Cultural Heritage Center on this effort.
