MIAMI, Fla. – As a result of significant improvements in its population and habitat conditions and reductions in direct threats, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) announced today that the West Indian manatee is proposed to be downlisted from endangered to threatened status under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of the Interior today welcomed a $100,000 donation from outdoor manufacturer, Thule, in support of the 21st Century Conservation Service Corps (21CSC), an ongoing national effort to engage the next generation of outdoor stewards by training and employing thousands of America’s young people and veterans to protect, restore, and enhance our nation’s public lands and waters. 

To date, the Buy-Back Program has paid more than $730 million to individual landowners and restored the equivalent of nearly 1.5 million acres of land to tribal governments.

While the KBRA will terminate due to the lack of congressional authorization, we still believe the future of the basin lies with negotiated agreements.
