Senior Scientist Curt Storlazzi of the USGS discusses the degradation of coastal habitats, in particular coral reefs, and how a combination of engineering, ecologic, geospatial, social, and economic tools can provide a more rigorous assessment of the coastal protection benefits of these natural resources. He addresses how that valuation as natural, national infrastructure can help finance their restoration through pre-disaster mitigation or post-disaster restoration funding and insurance.
