Washington, D.C. - Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Insular Areas, Tony Babauta, today signed a $1,304,880 Capital Improvement Project (CIP) grant to fund the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA). Funding will assist VIWMA in advancing existing wastewater projects at the LBJ Force Main, the Bovoni Housing Sewer Line and the Weymouth Rhymer Sewar Line.

VIWMA project descriptions include overseeing the replacement of a deteriorating force main and ensuring new sewer lines are safely and efficiently connected to existing lines.

“I am pleased to be supporting the Virgin Islands and Governor deJongh’s efforts to improve the island’s wastewater infrastructure facilities that protect our public health and the environment,” said Assistant Secretary Babauta.

“Moving forward with this initiative ensures greater reliability, the safety of the community and reduces the possibility of future failures within the existing system,” added Babauta.

New project installations and upgrades are expected to be completed before the end of this year.
