In addition to our in-gallery exhibitions, the Interior Museum presents the following online exhibitions via its portal on the Google Arts & Culture platform:

Portrait of an Agency: Secretarial Portraits at the U.S. Department of the Interior

View the museum's collection of more than 50 official secretarial portraits and learn about the men and women who have served as secretaries of the Interior since 1849. The tradition of secretarial portraiture is as old as Federal agencies themselves. Typically the portraits are commissioned near the end of a term and are painted from life. The artists who render them are often among the most renowned portraitists of their eras. To trace the history of the Department through these portraits is to gain unique insight into American history.

Stories in Miniature: The U.S. Department of the Interior Museum's Dioramas

Explore the 13 iconic dioramas specifically created for the Interior Museum between 1935 and 1945 to illustrate aspects of the Department of the Interior's mission. Valued for their historical details and fine craftsmanship, they represent a disappearing art form from the 1920s-1950s heyday of dioramas in American museums. This online exhibition also includes many never-before-published archival photographs showing how the dioramas were constructed.
