About the Office of International Affairs

The U.S. Department of the Interior has conducted international activities for more than 100 years, with the formal Office of International Affairs (INT) evolving to facilitate these efforts. The need for international engagement and cooperation emerged because the Department’s responsibilities—including managing wildlife, national parks, and natural resources—often extend beyond U.S. borders.

INT facilitates, supports, and coordinates DOI’s international engagement to advance DOI’s mission and support complementary U.S. foreign relations objectives abroad.  We maintain long-term, direct relationships with our unique counterparts who have similar missions in other countries—typically in Ministries of Environment, Energy, Water, Natural Resources, Science and Technology, Culture and Indigenous Affairs.

INT also serves as the primary DOI point of contact for the other federal agencies which conduct international activities, foreign embassies and ministries, and international organizations.

INT is organized into two divisions.

The International Operations Division is responsible for:

  • International Travel: Passports and Visas
  • International Travel: Policy and Process (System)
  • International Travel: Arranging
  • J-1 Visas
  • International and Inter-Agency Agreement Management

The International Relations Division is responsible for:

  • Foreign Technical Assistance
  • Interagency Coordination
  • International Engagements

Teams in this division are organized by geographic region and provide expertise and critical analyses on international issues and activities for countries of significance.

Our roles and responsibilities are further defined under DOI's Departmental Manual.
