Today, ahead of the third anniversary of President Biden signing the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Department of the Interior released a new analysis that estimates that investments from the law supported more than 28,000 jobs and contributed more than $3.3 billion to the economy in fiscal year 2024.

With a wildfire season that runs for nearly half of the year, the Bay Area is a hotspot for implementing and experimenting with wildfire management strategies. A strategy that has recently been gaining traction is to allow small fires to happen, but in a manageable quantity that doesn’t pose a threat to humans.

Since 2014, the Klamath Prescribed Fire Training Exchange – or KTREX – has been building capacity for burning in the ancestral territory of the Karuk Indigenous people. Organizers say it’s a promising model for putting more beneficial fire on the ground amid the wildfire crisis.

Controlled burning has major benefits to forest ecosystems, especially the longleaf pine. The trees once grew in abundance across the Sandhills of North Carolina but have diminished to less than 3 percent of their original 92 million acre range due to overdevelopment, logging and fire suppression. The Lumbee Cultural Burn Association wants to bring healing to ancestral lands, honor cultural traditions through fire-focused ecology, and protect the area from wildfires.
