Federal subsistence fishery for Eulachon closed in Federal public waters within District 1, except for the Unuk River.

KETCHIKAN, Alaska – Ketchikan Misty Fjords District Ranger Cathy Tighe, under authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, is closing the Federal public waters that flow into District 1, except the Unuk River drainage, to the taking of Eulachon from 12:01 a.m. on March 1, 2023, until 11:59 p.m. on April 15, 2023.

Regional Advisory Council membership application deadline extended through March 7, 2023

The deadline for submission of applications to fill seats on the 10 Subsistence Regional Advisory Councils has been extended. Applications must be received via email or fax by close of business on Friday, March 7, 2023, or be postmarked by that date. The extension will provide additional time for prospective applicants to submit their applications.

Previous announcement stated an incorrect meeting place for the Eastern Interior Alaska and Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Subsistence Regional Advisory Council. The changes are highlighted in yellow.

The Federal Subsistence Regional Advisory Councils will hold public meetings between February and April 2023 to develop proposals to change Federal subsistence hunting and trapping regulations for the 2024-2026 regulatory years and discuss other issues affecting subsistence in their regions.

The Federal Subsistence Board (Board) met January 31 to February 3, 2023, at the Egan Center in Anchorage, to consider proposed changes to Federal subsistence fish and shellfish regulations and fishery closure reviews.  In addition, the Board acted on deferred Wildlife Proposals WP22-40, WP22-07, WP22-08, and WP22-10, a threshold analysis for RFR22-01, a Nonrural Determination Proposal threshold assessment, and other items.

Public Hearings Announced for Fisheries Temporary Special Action Request FSA23-01 Regarding Salmon Fishing Closures on the Kanektok River to Non-Federally Qualified Users During June 2023 and June 2024

Fisheries Temporary Special Action Request FSA23-01, submitted by the Native Village of Kwinhagak, requests the Federal Subsistence Board (Board) to close Federal public waters of the Kanektok River drainage to the harvest of Chinook and Chum salmon except by Federally qualified subsistence users from June 1 through June 30, 2023, and June 1 through June 30, 2024.  The request cites Chum Salmon stocks in Western Alaska are in decline with the poorest returns on record, escapement goals throughout the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim region not being met, and the long period of decline of Chinook Salmon stocks throughout the state as reasons for the temporary special action request. In light of these concerns, the proponent considers that precautionary management actions are necessary due to the lack of available salmon assessment data for the Kanetok River .
